What is Teen Dating Violence?

According to the National Teen Dating Abuse Helpline, teen dating violence is a pattern of behavior that someone uses to gain control over his or her dating partner.

It includes physical abuse such as hitting, pushing, slapping; verbal abuse such as name calling, insults, degrading comments; emotional abuse which includes twisting words, manipulating, isolation from friends; or sexual abuse such as unwanted touch and forced physical contact.

Teen dating violence also includes digital abuse which is when your partner uses your cell phone, facebook or other social networks to control, monitor, humiliate, or embarrass you.

Check out the Teen Power and Control Wheel, which illustrates the different ways a partner may try to gain and maintain power in an abusive relationship.

If you believe you or someone you know is currenty in an unhealty relationship, please visit Love is Respect to speak with someone on their 24-hour text line.
