What is Domestic Violence?

Domestic violence
is a pattern of power and controlling behavior that one person exercises over an intimate partner in a current or former dating, married, or cohabitating relationship.

There are three type of Domestic Violence:

Physical,

Sexual,

Psychological (Emotional and mental)

Physical Violence is any physically aggressive behavior; withholding of physical needs (interrupt sleep or meals, deny help if sick), indirect physically harmful behavior, threat of physical violence (to others, to children) or destruction of property.

Physical violence includes:

·   Pushing
·   Shoving
·   Kicking
·   Slapping
·   Punching
·   Choking
·   Biting
·   Hitting
·   Burning
·   Stabbing
·   Shooting, etc
·   Hold hostage

Sexual Violence is the use of sex in exploitative fashion or forcing sex on another person. Consent in past does not indicate current consent.
Sexual violence includes:

1        Unwanted touching or abuse of genitals or breasts

2        Rape with objects

3        Offensive statements of another's sexuality or body

4        Forced sexual relations with others, including prostitution

5        Can be pressured, forced and/or coerced

Psychological abuse includes:

1        Verbal Abuse:

o  Name calling, cursing and threats

o  Derogatory or demeaning comments

2        Emotional Abuse:

o  Exploits vulnerability or character

o  Insulting or criticizing

o  Forcing victims to perform humiliating acts

o  Threats to harass, harm, or kill the victim or victim's family

o  Telling the victim he/she is mentally unstable/incompetent

o  Intimidation

o  Degradation

o  Consistently disregarding, ignoring or neglecting the victim's requests & needs

o  Using actions, statements or gestures that attack the victim's self-esteem

3        Other Forms Include:

o  Neglect

o  Denial of basic human needs - food, clothing, shelter, medical attention, or personal hygiene

o  Economic Deprivation: control income, cause victim to lose job, spend money on non-essentials

o  Destruction of property or pets

o  Isolation

§ Locking victim in the home

§ Providing no access to a car or telephone

§ Not allowing contact with friends and family

o  Use of children to control adult victim
